In my observation this weekend, I saw many species of birds. I believe it was because I focused my observation near a pond. I saw a trumpeter swan, a Red Tail Hawk, geese, and a crane. The day of my observation was cloudy and windy. There no rain, although it looked as if it would precipitate. In the area around the ponds, the plants were much greener than the plants that were not. You could tell that food sources would be more abundant for animals. The crane species that I saw was a Sandhill Crane, which is an endangered species. Red Tailed hawk feed on mice and other rodents in the refuge. This helps control populations in the refuge. The Trumpeter swan is the largest flying bird by mass in North America. The elk refuge is also a place that helps swan populations by limiting the amount of predators and human activity.

Great links to predators, prey and the food chain in this entry. As you continue with your species identifications also add in their scientific names to increase the detail of your postings! 14/15
